Does a Chiropractic Adjustment Help Colic?
I have been practicing chiropractic for forty years and have adjusted the spines of many babies. In the beginning of my practice, that was the treatment I used. The problem I had was that some babies responded and some did not. This was not only frustrating for me, but also for the parents and especially the babies, for whom the treatment was not effective. For this reason, I searched for other techniques that would help improve the percentages of babies that I could correct. I spent many hours with babies working on a technique that would help. Finally I began to see patterns developing as I treated these babies, and after several years I was able to predict the results of my treatment. Today, if a baby is colicky and has no other major health issues, such as failure to thrive, I am now seeing a drastic improvement in symptoms for my colicky babies in just two to three weeks! After just the first visit, babies are showing about 25% relief and within an average of eight to ten visits, the colic symptoms have disappeared.
One of the major problems with chiropractic adjustments is that we, as a profession, have done such a terrible job educating the general public about chiropractic and how effective it is for so many health ailments, that people are still skeptical about the chiropractic profession as a whole. When I started in practice in January 1973, the average percentage rate of people who were seeing Doctors of Chiropractic was about 15%. Forty years later, as a whole we are seeing many more patients, however, the percentage rate of use is still about 15% of the total population. As a profession we are working hard to improve this statistic, but it still remains about the same.
What this means is that 85% of the population still doesn’t see a doctor of Chiropractic. Because so many people are still afraid to try chiropractic, the overall population of colicky babies are not going to get a chance to see a chiropractor. Our treatment is gentle and does not include spinal manipulation, but so many parents are afraid of any doctor adjusting their baby's spine that they will not bring their baby to a chiropractor. In time, this will all change, but for now reality is what it is.
In Conclusion, is chiropractic helpful in reducing the symptoms of colic? Yes it is, but again, we as a population have to get over the fear of treating people’s spines. When people finally figure out the many benefits of chiropractic care, healthcare as we know it will change dramatically.
