Failure To Thrive
During my forty years in practice I have come across several babies with failure to thrive. The babies can have colic but also they have other conditions that are very serious. Can failure to thrive be caused by acid reflux or GERD? The answer to this is yes, however there are also other conditions that can cause this as well. My experience with these babies is that they are obviously in pain. Most of these cases were directly related to gastro-intestinal disorders.
These babies cry much of the time especially when you try to feed them. Whether it is a breast fed or bottle fed they will react the same, these babies do not grow on schedule. They are very slow to gain weight if they do, and will usually continue to loose weight. These children need very special care and most will require assisted feeding by NG tubing or a tube inserted into the stomach. This is a very serious condition and is very life threatening to the baby. Intense medical care is required in order to save this babies life. If your baby does not respond to conservative care, have your baby checked to eliminate the presence of failure to thrive.
